Hoyer Hosts 10th Annual Women’s Equality Day Luncheon
WASHINGTON DC – Today Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) hosted the 10th Annual Women’s Equality Day Luncheon an event he hosts each year to celebrate Women’s Equality Day with women from the Fifth District. “The fight for women’s equality in America has been a long battle ” said Congressman Hoyer. “It began in earnest when the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention produced the Declaration of Sentiments and sparked a movement that sought to upend the entire social system that had existed for centuries and continued with the adoption of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. It is remarkable to see what women have achieved since then but we all know that there is still more to be done. Today is an opportunity to recommit ourselves to making full equality for women a reality.” “The world has come far in the effort of equality for women because in every generation women and men have come together to fight for it ” continued Congressman Hoyer. “I’d like to thank the Honorable Hilda Solis and our speakers for joining us here today and for serving as role models for all of the young women who I know will someday achieve what we never imagined today.” Each year Congressman Hoyer joins women from the Fifth District to mark Women's Equality Day which commemorates the anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution which granted women the right to vote. This year’s keynote speaker was the Honorable Hilda L. Solis. Other speakers included U.S. Senator Ben Cardin Maryland Democratic Party Chair Yvette Lewis Maryland State Senator Joanne Benson Mayor of Greenbelt Judith Davis Howard County Councilwoman Courtney Watson Reverend Jamila Woods-Jones and Sue Apple a member of Rep. Hoyer’s Women’s Advisory Network. Equal Pay
