Hoyer Meets with Prince George’s County Workforce Investment Board
LARGO MD – This afternoon Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) met with members of the Prince George’s County Workforce Investment Board to hear about their workforce development programs and how they are working to help Prince George’s residents get back to work. “I was pleased to meet today with the Prince George’s County Workforce Investment Board to learn about how this local program is benefitting residents entering and returning to the workforce and employers seeking qualified candidates for employment ” stated Congressman Hoyer. “This program is about providing opportunities – both for workers to develop new skills and for employers who will rely on a skilled workforce to be successful. I am pleased that this program is working to help Prince George’s residents get back to work and to drive a sustainable economic recovery for our state and our nation.” The WIB is comprised of a team of private and public-sector partners with a shared goal: to promote economic prosperity continued growth and advancement among the county’s businesses and residents. They work together to provide guidance and oversight of the local workforce investment system and ensure that businesses have the skilled workers and resources needed to remain competitive and prosper; job seekers can acquire the training and knowledge necessary to achieve long-term careers; and our young people have access to opportunities in education career exploration and work experience with which to build careers. Congressman Hoyer and House Democrats have made investments in education a priority through their Make It In America plan – an important initiative to support job creation by providing an environment for businesses to innovate and make products here in the U.S. which will help more families make it in America. This jobs plan includes several proposals that will strengthen education and workforce development: Workforce Investment Act: Urges reauthorization of the Workforce Investment Act to ensure that workers who seek opportunities in a new field or new opportunities within their own field have the support they need JOBS Act: Establishes a Workforce Investment Act pilot program to provide education and training programs in advanced manufacturing AMERICA Works Act: Strengthens our workforce by helping American workers earn certifications degrees and qualifications for the jobs American industry needs to fill SECTORS Act: Forms partnerships between businesses unions and educators to train workers for some of the most needed 21st Century jobs Jobs/Economy/Small Business
