Hoyer Statement on House Passage of the CARES Act
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on House passage of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act:
“Today, the House took action to protect Marylanders and their families as we continue to confront the coronavirus pandemic. The bipartisan bill we passed today will provide critical resources to hospitals and health care workers in our state, and put money directly in the pockets of hardworking families. These steps are critical to ensuring that as many Marylanders as possible can stay home and help flatten the curve while providing a small amount of relief to families in our state who are worried about their finances while large parts of our economy are put on hold.
“I was proud to bring this legislation to the Floor as Majority Leader and ensure its passage. Working closely with the rest of our Maryland Congressional Delegation, I made it clear that bold action was required to ensure that states receive the support they need from the federal government during this crisis. Unfortunately, Senate Republicans insisted on playing partisan games and shortchanging residents of the District of Columbia in this critical legislation, putting our area's response efforts at risk. I am committed to working with Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and our colleagues from across the National Capital Region to fix this issue in upcoming legislation and ensure that our area has every resource possible to save lives and protect the vulnerable. Together, we will defeat this virus and come back stronger than before.”
