Hoyer Statement Thanking Maryland Senate President Mike Miller For His Service to the State

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today after Maryland Senate President Thomas V. "Mike" Miller Jr. announced he would step down as Senate President:

"I join my fellow Marylanders in thanking Mike Miller for his thirty-two years of service as Senate President. Mike is a consensus builder, artful politician, and an institution in our state. Throughout his distinguished tenure as Senate President, Mike has been a champion for Maryland families, for the health of Chesapeake Bay, for improving transportation in our state, and for equal opportunity and justice. As a fellow Terp, I have appreciated Mike’s steadfast support and advocacy for the University of Maryland.  He has fought to ensure that students across our state have access to quality education, from early childhood learning to post-secondary institutions. Everything Mike has done has been with an eye toward the long-term success of the American Dream in Maryland.

"Every time Mike has run for office, he and I have been on the same ticket. As a former President of the Maryland Senate, I know how much hard work and dedication is required to lead the body. Though often wearing a stern face, Mike has displayed his soft and caring heart in the efforts he has led to bring hope and opportunity to Marylanders, displaying a deep respect and admiration for the institution of the Senate throughout his tenure and a belief in its ability to deliver for the people it serves.

“I join in congratulating Senator Bill Ferguson on his unanimous selection by the Senate Democratic Caucus to succeed Mike as President of the Senate. His dedication to his community and experience serving in the State Senate make him an excellent choice to take the mantle of leadership from Mike. I know he will continue to build on the important work Mike has done for the people of Maryland.

“Mike remains a dear friend, and I continue to keep him and his family in my prayers. The people of Maryland are lucky to have had Mike Miller as their Senate President and are fortunate to have his continued service.”
