Hoyer Statement on Vice President Kamala Harris Selecting Governor Tim Walz as Her Running Mate

Bowie, MD — Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today after Vice President Kamala Harris announced her decision to select Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate:

"Governor Tim Walz is an outstanding choice to be the next Vice President of the United States. An exceptional leader in Minnesota and a devoted public servant to our nation, Governor Walz will be an excellent partner for Vice President Harris as she continues her work protecting foundational American freedoms, building an economy that works for all Americans, and ensuring that we defeat Donald Trump and his extreme MAGA enablers.

"For almost 20 years, I have been lucky to count Governor Walz, and his wife Gwen, as friends. Governor Walz and I served together in the House of Representatives for over a decade, where I saw his dedication to the American people and his tireless advocacy firsthand. He was an invaluable Member of our caucus, serving as Ranking Member on the House Committee of Veterans' Affairs, leading American efforts to promote human rights in China, and ensuring that American farmers had the resources and support they needed. During that time, Governor Walz was the highest-ranking enlisted soldier ever to serve in Congress — a distinction he carried proudly. An Army National Guard Veteran and former teacher, Governor Walz's work ethic helped him to be a pragmatic, effective leader in the House. His plainspoken, common-sense approach to governing allowed him to deliver for Veterans and Minnesotans. I know he will bring that same dedication and empathy to the Vice Presidency.

"Democrats and our fellow Americans have much to be excited about in a Harris-Walz ticket. Governor Walz is ready to represent our country faithfully on the international stage and lead alongside Vice President Harris. Their vision and talents will serve our nation well in the critical months ahead and I look forward to hearing from Governor Walz later this month at the Democratic National Convention. We cannot go backward, and Governor Walz will help ensure that American families, Veterans, and working people are moving forward."
