Long before Monday night’s revelation that five U.S. Supreme Court justices are likely to overturn 50 years of legal precedent in Roe v. Wade, Democratic legislators had begun preparations for Maryland to accept more abortion-seekers from out of state.

As of July 1, a new law will allow nurse practitioners, physician assistants and midwives — not just physicians — to perform abortions in Maryland. The law was vetoed by Republican Gov. Larry Hogan, but that decision was overridden by the heavily Democratic state legislature.

Moore launched his campaign for governor back in June. He’s best known for his military service, running a nonprofit, and his autobiography titled, “The Other Wes Moore.” Hoyer said he supports Moore as a veteran and candidate who will fight against poverty.

HBCUs get federal grants to support students and campus safety

Federal grants to enhance security and mental health initiatives will be awarded to historically Black colleges and universities that have received recent bomb threats, Vice President Kamala Harris said Wednesday.

More than one-third of the nation’s HBCUs received bomb threats in the past three months; they’re now eligible to receive awards from the Project School Emergency Response to Violence (Project SERV) program at the Department of Education, which typically range between $50,000 and $150,000.

Projects in Southern Maryland would get over $10 million from an omnibus fiscal 2022 appropriations bill that passed the U.S. House and Senate last week.

Rep. Steny Hoyer (D, Md.-5th) noted that his district would be getting the funds as part of 10 earmarks that he sponsored as part of the $1.5 trillion bill. Each congressman is capped at 10, he said in a release.

St. Mary’s County would get at least $3.65 million for three projects.

This package includes funding for all ten Community Project Funding requests submitted by Congressman Hoyer. When assembling the 2022 Fiscal Year Omnibus, the House Committee on Appropriations asked Members to submit up to ten projects for their districts. As part of that process, Congressman Hoyer solicited requests on his website and submitted ten projects to the Appropriations Committee. Each Member is limited to no more than ten Community Project Funding requests.
